"A portrait of an outrageous friendship."
1957. Young ex-Marine Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser) works as a gardener for retired film director James Whale (Ian McKellen), maker of the famous Frankenstein films of the 1930s. Although Whale lives in comfortable seclusion, his health deteriorates and he is cared for by the protective housekeeper Hannah. Boone becomes fascinated by his employer's stories about 'old' Hollywood, but is well aware that the old man is gay. He becomes suspicious when Whale asks him to pose for sketches in his studio by the pool.

"Strong language", they say beforehand on the BBC where I saw the film, but I thought it was mainly "strong acting" because strong players are needed to bring such a film with a mainly psychological slant into a fascinating whole. So tribute to McKellen, Fraser and last but not least Lynn Redgrave. Bill Condon, of course, did too. The Open Air Party "George Cukor", even more than the many fascinating dialogues, is the highlight for me.

Above average in the gay/lesbian genre (as far as that is a movie genre at least).
Not so much because of the usual acceptance thing, but because of the figure of James Whale. Once a top director in the early days of sound films (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein), now disillusioned with his profession and now also old, sick and lonely.
Nice role by Ian McKellen as an old cousin, but cinematically all a bit sober.

Seen again and I remain fascinated by the subtle way in which the uncomfortable attitude towards homosexuality is portrayed. The film is full of those beautifully constructed yet very uncomfortable moments, which give both the character of Bredan Fraser and the viewer shivers. Ian McKellen is also fantastic as the creepy old pervert that makes you feel sympathetic again.
