The Nanny Diaries plot

"A comedy about life at the top, as seen from the bottom."

Annie has just graduated and gets the chance to work for a big company and become successful, but before she starts she has doubts about whether she wants this. While struggling with herself about who she wants to become, she is offered, through a misunderstanding, to work as a nanny for a wealthy family. She soon discovers that the son does not get any attention from his parents and therefore takes out his anger on the outside world. The mother is too busy with her wealthy life to face the problems in her life and the father is never home and isolates himself from his family. When Annie, who is mistakenly referred to as Nanny only, begins to bond with the boy, she has to put her private life aside to get his back on track.

“My desire to be an observer of life was actually keeping me from having one.”

The Nanny Diaries is a nice and original comedy that is not very memorable but has many entertaining moments. The film has a radiant center with Scarlett Johansson and she takes the film on her shoulders with ease.

The voice-over and the 'diary approach' are nice and Johansson already shows here (just like in Her) that he has one of the sultry voices in Hollywood. The bond between the nanny and the child is nicely built and Laura Linney has a beautiful role as the terrible mother who makes the nanny's life pretty miserable. Linney plays it all with visible pleasure and in between Giamatti also makes a nice splash as her absent husband. Johansson and Evans already show an infectious chemistry here and you almost expect them to put on their Captain America and Romanoff (lots of latex) costume at any moment. Romanoff undercover as a nanny would have produced a 5 star film in any case... But The Nanny Diaries is in itself also an entertaining film that never rises above average but is nice to have seen once.

If you carefully scrape away the scratch layer of this modern version mix between Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and Nanny McGee, you will discover a harrowing indictment of the materialistic moms and dads of the Upper East Side New York. A world in which the nanny takes care of the upbringing of the kids. Nice starting point, but Scarlett Johansson plays a little too much on autopilot and the satire is quickly turned into a neither fish nor meat romcom. Nicholas Art is fun as an unruly rascal who is (yes) very quickly transformed into a cute little one who never, ever wants to leave you behind. Yet I will soon forget him and this film 2,5 *

Friendly. The film is quite lighthearted, and the whole setting of an au pair with a wealthy New York family is also quite interesting, which more than makes up for the predictability. Johansson isn't my favorite actress, I'm pretty indifferent to her, and I'm not going to portray the role of her life here, but her performance is otherwise decent and somewhat representative of the whole movie: nice, but not great . 3*.
