Donald Pleasence versus Peter Cushing in 1976 in Greece, accompanied by a soundtrack by Brian Eno (never released as an album). That can hardly go wrong, but apart from the occasional moment of excitement (especially when Cushing has screen time), it is all just a bit too boring.

The only thing that still raises a few eyebrows is the question of why Father Pleasence is bringing the American PI along, for heaven's sake; the poor man is missing pretty much everything.

The film has a number of positive points, such as the beautiful location of Acrocorinth Castle in the Peloponnese, Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing, the solid build-up, and the attractive ladies Luan Peeters (Laurie) and Vanna Reville (Beth). Unfortunately, you see a very brief nude scene featuring both ladies. Kostas Karagiorgis (director), who plays Milo, does not come across as convincing. His role is also far-fetched, considering he has to come from America and does not believe in this evil cult at all. He only wants facts. His girlfriend (Jane Lyle) in America is shown naked for longer, but actually adds nothing. What sinks the film is the very easy way out that Pleasence uses to liquidate Cushing and his followers in the final scene. Ridiculous. 5/10

On Monday, to wrap things up, I just finished with The Devil's Men, made possible by Netflix. And although it is far from top-notch, the film certainly had its moments.

The story is simple, involving missing youths at a specific location in Greece where Pastor Roche has long suspected the situation, yet the authorities are ignoring his concerns. When acquaintances of the pastor subsequently disappear, he sets out with a private detective, leading to quite an adventure. Downsides, however, are the form of the ultimate evil—either in the form of a talking statue or the act of conjuring the evil with the thrown holy water, causing everything to explode...right. The PI also comes across as somewhat clumsy at times, missing a lot and being just as unwilling to listen. And what a bizarrely bad audio track, where everything is distorted and cuts out when driving, and otherwise sounds very tinny.

And yet, The Devil's Men has some pretty nice moments with the landscapes and the beautiful location in the form of the temple, Pleasence is good as always, Peter Cushing holds his own as the high priest with his subjects, and a number of moments are built up well, such as when the men in black appear. Additionally, the whole thing has quite a good atmosphere, the soundtrack has some pretty nice moments too, and we are pretty well off in terms of female beauty. A passing grade, on the other hand, is just a bit too much, so the whole thing gets stuck at a 2.5.
