Ha, the Paris of the Interbellum: jambon-beurre with a demi, entraîneuses in shadowy bars in Batignolles, the stars of Studio Billancourt and of course a Pernod au zinc...the era when 2/3 of Parisian buildings were cafés and 3/4 of the young women you meet on the street are prostitutes (known by euphemisms like 'masseuse', 'coureuse', 'roulure'...). The film also deals with these misadventures of young ladies who leave for Paris from the 'province' in search of money and happiness. A folkflore that we have sadly lost due to that daft welfare state. 'Maigret' is not a star vehicle, but Depardieu gives a melancholy dimension to the commissioner through an unusually understated performance.

Patrice Leconte immerses us in the universe, with great attention to costumes and decoration. Really every scene is a picture. In my young (radical) years I would have found this empty nostalgia, but, well, now I'm long satisfied when a film manages to distract me from the torment of existence for 90 minutes.

The Maigrets with Gabin are better, though this one isn't a complete disaster all in all. I was expecting a bit more atmosphere. The Paris of the 1950s and 1960s could definitely be visualized better, because now the film could just as well be set in Brussels. Positive is a simple detective story that is quite fun to follow. In the end I found the denouement rather unsurprising.. Depardieu is very suitable as the dry commissioner who seems tired of all the crimes he has had to solve.

Boring, slow crime story in which Depardieu drags himself excruciatingly slow and tiring towards the end of the film. The detective story does not captivate at all and you can see the denouement coming from miles away. 3/10
