Airy and simple.

Sonnenfeld is not a great director and probably never will be. But it is someone who tries to give his films some panache on his profit. And that actually describes this Get Shorty perfectly.

The story doesn't offer much, the characters are a bit bland and it's all familiar territory, but Sonnenfeld just brings it in a funny way. With some camera work that is just that little bit more elegant and with a dash of humor that is just a bit more scornful. And of course a cast that greedily cooperates.

The film could have been a bit shorter and to be really good it could have been a bit sharper. This is the kind of film that a director like Álex de la Iglesia would make much funnier and smoother, but for what it is and especially for what it could have been, it's all pretty easy to take away.

2.5*

“Rough business, this movie business. I'm gonna have to go back to loan-sharking just to take a rest.”

Reasonable farce. It's that the actors are so good and clearly having fun, because otherwise Get Shorty would have succumbed to his own messy script. Not all subplots are equally interesting. Not everything works equally well, but actors like Travolta, Russo, DeVito, Hackman and Gandolfini know how to sell it all. The interplay between these acting greats produces many funny and strong scenes, and it is no punishment to watch them for over an hour and a half.

Typically an example of nice to have seen once, but nothing more. As someone said here, Barry Sonneveld is not a great director, which is also apparent in this film. This film makes little to no impression.
