Rancher Lee Hackett (Van Heflin) is still used to making his own rules and resolving disagreements with a gun. He has tried to teach his two sons this same principle, but only his oldest son Ed (Tab Hunter) has succeeded. His youngest son Davy (James Darren) is different. When Ed shoots an Indian, Davy becomes increasingly involved with the murdered Indian's sister. Because of this, Lee finds out that his way of doing things no longer works in this day and age.
