Mimic 2 (2001)

Weak sequel.

The dubious director De Segonzac was given the difficult task of making the amusing Part 1 pale in comparison. He failed miserably, however, but it is by no means truly bad. Having taken a different approach and focused more on action than suspense, the viewer is in for an entertaining but highly clichéd and sometimes lame horror film. Towards the end, the film sags considerably.

A somewhat bland sequel for which they actually managed to get an actress from the first film to play more or less the lead role or point of identification. The film looks set to become a practically plotless collection of gore moments, but once inside the school building, the story does pick up a reasonable flow; the cast doesn't even do a bad job, the two adult lead actors are likeable performers (Alix Koromzay bears a resemblance to Joan Cusack, and Bruno Campos has the charisma of Michael Biehn during Kyle Reese's era), and the critters crawling out of the suitcase look delightfully unappetizing. The final scene is quite a letdown, but as a whole, this sequel is more enjoyable than I had expected (though that might also be because I found the original rather disappointing).

Watched it again today; I see that no one has replied after my comment, so here is my comment again after 6 years.

Actually (almost) as good as the first part, this time not in the subway tunnels, but just in the city (New York) and the dark alleys.

He is no longer as mysterious as in the first part, because you know what this monster looks like right from the start.

As the film progresses, it takes place at the school where this main character teaches; together with three others, they search for a way out with the "monster" / insect chasing them.

I thought there were some reasonably exciting scenes in it again.

The final scene was pretty good too, all in all I was entertained again, it only lasts 80 minutes so the time flies by.
