Much better than I expected. Saw the director's cut on blu ray. Obviously a "homage" to Alien and Aliens, but that didn't bother me.

Something about an epidemic that doesn't have a vaccine… it's all over 2020. Cockroaches seem to be the major carriers here and they're hard to eradicate, so we're piecing together our own super-insect to get rid of those bastards. Cockroaches gone, epidemic gone and then the fun begins because all that mutating turns out to have some nasty side effects.

Kind of horror action, where the amount of action could have been a little more. We spend most of the movie wandering in sewers and subway systems. Yes insects are of course dirty, scary, slippery creatures with little empathy, but here they are a bit too big to be really scary. At the most, there is still something to abhor because of all the slime that is in and around those animals.

The concept of Mimic remains very nice and the nighttime (underground) New York always gives such a nice dirty feeling. Guillermo del Toro knows how to put down a great film in terms of atmosphere. In terms of plot, it stops after an hour and boredom strikes. In addition, there is also a bit too much mediocre late 90s CGI in the film. This does not stand the test of time very well.

There is a lot of potential in Mimic and I feel some sentiment about this, but it just falls short in the above areas.

2.5*
