Mala Noche plot

"If you fuck with the bull, you get the horn!"

Walt Curtis is hopelessly in love with Johnny, a young illegal Mexican immigrant. However, there are quite a few obstacles that make love more difficult: Johnny isn't gay, Walt thinks he's just a weirdo and he's not even 18 and doesn't speak a word of English.

Mala noche was in a duo box with that other Van Sant film, Paranoid Park. It turns out to be his debut film. You can already see here that Van Sant has quite a talent. No idea why the film had to be shot in black and white - with occasional color images, but his camera handling and close-ups still caught the eye. The lovemaking scenes, for example, were very sensual and almost artistically depicted.

Story-wise, I thought it was less special, although the plot surrounding homosexuality is interesting. As a debut film, this is an introduction. The acting is indeed not great, but I think Van Sant gets the most out of it.

Raw debut film, shot almost entirely in black and white, by director Gus Van Sant about a store clerk (Tim Streeter) who is hopelessly in love with a young, illegal Mexican immigrant. The camera work is sporadically impressive and Streeter is a nice, John Cusack-like protagonist, but the plot and characters have little else to offer. The lively atmospheric drawing makes up for some things.
