"He is NOT man's best friend", the desperate Dr Jarret [Lance Henriksen] makes clear to the police when Max, the dog on whom he has performed various scientific experiments in his laboratory, has disappeared without a trace. Max is 'freed' by investigative journalist Lori Tanner [Ally Sheedy, the 'crazy' from The Breakfast Club] who decides to take care of this intelligent and hitherto exemplary dog herself. What she doesn't know is that Max's more aggressive character traits are suppressed by a sedative. And that sedation doesn't last forever!

Successful combination of horror and comedy, through strong editing, makes you believe that Max is really a super-intelligent all-rounder. Director/screenwriter John Lafia uses puppets sparingly but effectively to create a number of jump scares. It is also refreshing to have a 'bad guy' who (despite Lance Henriksen playing the role) is not really bad. There is also a lot to laugh about, for example when Max is confronted with a paperboy, a postman or a pickpocket. And of course there are the inevitable dog catchers, who hunt for their prey in high spirits and of course come home disappointed.

Guilty pleasure. The story is less developed than Cujo for example. Max steals the show and the rest have become real extras. But I could still remember some scenes from the past. That makes the film a pleasant B-movie. Like those cheap horror films with monsters or slashers, this is one with a dog. And even though it can do a bit more than the average dog, it comes across well because it doesn't get too big. Lance Henriksen is ideal for this kind of films. The rest do not do badly, but will never win a prize.

I thought some of the scenes where the dog strikes were really well done, especially for

about the last half hour are reserved. A beautiful animal by the way that I can have in my house

would like to have it then not this genetically manipulated the more I, mindful

a certain scene in the movie, I have a cat in the house. All the actors did well,

with Lance Henriksen of course perfect for the role. The script clearly does not

too difficult, but there is an unpretentious fluency to counter it. With also striking

lots of humor and therefore completely different from a movie like Cujo. The ending is a bit disappointing

(I've seen something like this before), but that doesn't stop me from watching the film.

to give a narrow 4.0 rating.
