Tôkaidô Yotsuya Kaidan plot
The masterless samurai Iemon kills a prominent swordsman and then marries his unwitting daughter Iwa. However, a man, Naosuke, witnesses the murder and tries to blackmail Iemon, while Iemon's mother tries to force him to marry a woman from a prominent family. Naosuke and Iemon's mother conspire and threaten to disclose Iemon's murder to the magistrate if he doesn't grant both of their wishes. To do that, however, he has to kill his beloved Iwa.
