The film's opening scenes already emphasize the sad consequences of "The Great Leap Forward," the cultural revolution: state intervention, the curtailment of private initiative, and, above all, the dangers inherent in expressing one's own opinion.

The film follows a simple family that suffers greatly and truly deteriorates.

It is a beautiful, intimate sketch of these people who are actually still very calm about their setbacks and who are also judged and treated completely unfairly in a period when fanaticism and reprisals were rampant.

A clever, meticulously crafted film with a very atmospheric, simple, and impoverished depiction of the street and its inhabitants, where daily life unfolds and where occasionally sad scenes of harsh, strange interference occur, yet the film reflects little hope for improvement.

And little Tietou? Unfortunately, he, like his kite stuck in the treetop, is also trapped in a system that offers him few choices.

This isn't the first time the theme of the Great Leap Forward has been addressed. Each time, it has yielded compelling cinema for me, untangling the political and social fabric of the communist regime. State intervention and the limited freedom of expression remain somewhat surreal for us Westerners.

We follow the life of Tietou, who deeply experiences the consequences of the regime when his parents are taken away from him. The Blue Kite offers an intense and authentic portrait of this coming-of-age story. It faltered a bit for me halfway through, but the overall quality remains high.

That sparrow campaign was indeed remarkable, and I found it hard to place at the time. But if you tinker with biodiversity in an area, there are undoubtedly consequences.

It was particularly slow-moving, and as a result, the film didn't always captivate me, making it quite boring at times. It's an interesting glimpse into China at the time, but visually a bit dull (which is partly due to the technical quality of the cameras) and felt detached, preventing me from connecting with the characters. 2.0*.
