In the near future, the world will be plagued by a total barrenness of the human race. No children have been born since 2009. Then comes the shocking news that the youngest person on Earth - who is eighteen - has died. “As the sound of the playgrounds faded, the despair set in. Very odd, what happens in a world without children's voices.”
A film with two (or three) faces. The atmospheric beginning, the somewhat long-winded middle part and the spectacular ending with one of the best filmed action scenes I've ever seen. The film starts very well and the gray and gloomy decor makes you feel right in the film. After the death of Julian (Julianne Moore) it seems that all the air escapes from a balloon, and it becomes a messy and long-winded whole.
When the film moves to Bexhill and the baby is born, the story picks up a bit more and well, that minute-long action scene isn't it... Unparalleled. In any case, Lubezki's cinematography and camera work are beautiful. Especially when all those soldiers are silently staring at the baby and then just continue waging war. Cynicism at its best, but it fits. These kinds of stories usually go down well with me and here too I found it extremely interesting. The script sometimes looks a bit messy and unclear, but it is all interesting. Owen is strong and Caine also has a nice role as a hippie. Children of Men has its ups and downs but is an atmospheric film with an intriguing premise and great action scenes.

In the near future, man has become barren. The world is in chaos and thousands of refugees are trying to reach England. Theo - a former revolutionary - is approached by his ex's organization to help them with a secret mission. Safeguarding the first pregnant woman in 18 years...
Children of Men is a good science fiction film with a very strong concept. Man has become barren for unknown reasons and the world is about to collapse. And it's all done in a very timely and (shockingly) plausible way. The refugee camps and the like amplify that effect. At the same time, the well-known Orwellian dystopian concept has been given a contemporary look. And underneath it all is a good drama about the father who has lost his son who has the chance to help another child.
It is clearly an Alfonso Cuarón film. The drab color grading, unstable shots (I think the whole movie was done handheld) and wacky British locations were very reminiscent of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban he made two years earlier. The action scenes with long shots were impressive and nowhere in the film do you really get the impression that a lot of special effects have been used, which enhances the realism. The combination of 'underground' hippie music and vague rock music from the millennial era also gives the film a kind of modern look.
Clive Owen has a strong lead and Michael Caine had a funny part as the old hippie (funny, considering he played more conservative roles in the hippie era).
Children of Men is an entertaining and at times quite exciting science fiction film that is well worth watching.
