Bit of a mixed feeling. On the one hand, Caddyshack has a few wonderfully dry jokes, but on the other it all wants to get too bland. Chase and Dangerfield in particular make the film worthwhile and the pleasant script ensures that you hardly have to get bored.

Was a bit disappointing I must say. In itself, there are many good ingredients available to make a nice comedy out of this, but it doesn't quite shine.

Chase and Murray are the nicest elements here. Especially Murray, who is constantly fighting the ground squirrel, provides the necessary humor. Around that it is often a bit bland and there are also clearly moments in which it is all less fun or just collapses.

It also seems clear to me that the foundations for Groundhog Day have been laid here. That collaboration between Ramis and Murray is certainly a lot funnier than this one for the time being.

American sports movies; you have to love it... With American Football I immediately suffer from allergies (about the stupidest Neanderthal sport I can think of), but I can still enjoy golf. It helps that I played it myself a few times.

The classic status that Caddyshack apparently has in America is therefore not justified, although it is understandable: with Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray you have three of the greatest American comedians of the last century in one movie. Quite unique, but to hand out high scores for that reason alone is a bit too far for me.

I've seen Rodney Dangerfield a few times now and he always plays the same character: a noisy Jewish nouveau riche. Just as nice, but after half an hour you have seen it. I found Bill Murray particularly disappointing here, just like in his debut film Meatballs a year earlier. Such a role as klutz does not suit him. At the time, he was clearly still looking for a character of his own. Chevy Chase as an unfettered playboy comes into its own then.

The story continues nicely in the languid summer atmosphere of the film. Not unkind. 2.5*
