La Marche de l'Empereur plot

"In the harshest place on Earth, love finds a way."

Every winter the emperor penguins in Antarctica go on a long journey. Once they arrive at their destination, mating begins, after which the females lay an egg. Then the females return to the ocean to recuperate. The males stay behind to incubate the eggs and after two months the eggs hatch. When the females return to feed the chicks, the tables are turned: the mothers stay behind, while the males return to the sea to finally eat. As soon as it gets warmer, the females return to the sea with the chicks and the chicks learn to survive.

They don't exactly make it easy on themselves, these imperial fat geese. I've experienced some of their hardships before, but it's still doable. Funny beasts with that waddling and silly staring at each other, their eggs and little ones. The trumpeting is also funny. As it turns out, it can also sound terribly sad. A love story on ice.

With drama and beautiful images, it is prize shooting on the large ice fields. It must be quite an experience to be among those penguins and to film. I had Morgan Freeman as the voice over. Undoubtedly very interesting commercially, but I'm not really looking forward to the voice of Lucius Fox, Somerset or Red Redding. Then give me an unfamiliar, captivating voice.

Doesn't take away from the fact that he is the best in control. Not too emphatic and this narrative perspective appeals to me more than what is used in the French version. Wurman's score is sometimes a bit too much, but oh well. A fairly good documentary, nature seems a bit more cruel to me than what Jacquet shows here, but that's okay. After all, it has tummy tucks.

Good.

Beautiful documentary. I must confess that I am not the most critical soul when it comes to this kind of documentary. Nature in all its beautiful cruelty already does a very large part of the work; the penguins do the rest. Not necessarily the most imaginative animals (although) and if you had asked me as a child about a top 5 'favorite animals' I would never have put penguins there. But fair is fair. The documentary is well made, interesting and although, unfortunately I was forced to see it, in Dutch - no sneer at Urbanus, he just doesn't really add value - nicely told.

3.5
