“Rock & roll!”

Absurd and anarchic film full of black humor. The Rules of Attraction is based on the work of Bret Easton Ellis so what do you want. Director Avary gives it his own twist with a non-chronological narrative and lots of rewinds and fast forwards. Nicely done.

The campus is full of unhinged and strange students and teachers, and the booze and drugs abound. The strongest points of the film are the humor, the smooth and original direction and the music. It gives The Rules of Attraction a unique vibe. With actors who feel the madness well. Especially the scene in which you see Van Der Beek and Sossamon start their day in split screen is great. Just like Pardue who quickly discusses his European journey. Well done.

In the beginning, the film feels like a chaotic, rudderless mess. I struggled with the characters and had no idea where the movie was headed. But as the film progressed, I was able to enjoy the dark humor and audiovisual tricks that make the film original. There are ingenious things in it and that quick overview of Victor's Eurotrip is an instant classic. The references to American Psycho feel a bit forced. The source material will undoubtedly intertwine this better.

So it was a mixed experience for me. But certainly sufficient.

The film starts with a rape scene, albeit with a wink, but still… Then the film fails to recover from that debauched beginning. There are a few fun scenes from time to time. Overall, though, it's a messy film about college students who indulge in drugs, booze, and sex, or "Rock 'n roll," as Sean (James Van der Beek) calls it out. The cameos of Faye Dunaway, Swoosie Kurtz, Eric Stoltz and others are nice interludes, but it doesn't end there.
