At the beginning of her career, only Fanny's mother is convinced that her daughter Fanny Brice will make it as a comedian in show business. One day she gets the chance to perform at Keeney's Music Hall. Fanny's hilarious debut as a show ballet girl on roller skates lands her a contract as a comedian. A year later she is under contract with Florenz Ziegfeld in his world renowned Follies. She becomes a star, falls in love with the attractive professional gambler Nick Arnstein and marries him. Luck is not with Nick, however, and he gets involved in a shady deal. He is eventually sentenced to one and a half years in prison, but Fanny refuses to divorce him, despite the negative publicity surrounding the scandal.

When the film opens with music against a black screen for five minutes and then presents two more minutes of intro titles, Funny Girl is actually already 1-0 behind. Fortunately, the first hour, counted from the moment there is a film image, is then very nice. I think the film works best as a rom-com, while the musical part is a bit less, almost no classic songs are heard. The second hour the film sinks in, only to come to a nice conclusion in the last 20-30 minutes. The problems are presented a bit more seriously and are more profound than you encounter in the average nobody. Closing song by Streisand is by far the strongest in terms of musical impact and the image here also works very well (actually this is not a musical scene but a normal stage performance within the film). Spacious three stars.

It can't be called really bad, but for 150 minutes of film the story is a bit too standard, the humor a bit too bland and the music not startling enough. Then you sometimes get the tendency to continue rinsing.
Saw quite a few parallels with A Star Is Born.
