Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) is a great singer, showgirl and musical star. She is married to the charming Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif). Unfortunately, her life takes a drastic turn when Nicky files for divorce. Together with her good friend Bobby (Roddy McDowall) they look for new material in various clubs, there she meets club owner Billy Rose (James Caan), she is impressed by this man, who writes beautiful songs. Billy has a mind of his own and this regularly clashes with Fanny's will. Yet she is persuaded to play a major role in Billy Rose's first produced musical. This is going to be a big fiasco, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Fortunately there is Fanny, with her years of experience she knows how to make the musical a successful show and Billy learns a lot from her.
