A group of proud Cheyennes live in appalling conditions on an arid reservation in Oklahoma. The tribe decides to return to their original hunting grounds in the Rocky Mountains. The US president orders a cavalry division to escort the Indians at a distance, as he wavers between his humanitarian ideals and fear that the once infamous Cheyennes will start another war. It will be a hellish journey through the mountains, in which the harsh climate takes its toll on the group.
