A thoroughly feel-good film with a young Elizabeth Taylor —with dental braces!— as the radiant center. I generally don't like Mickey Rooney, but fortunately he largely omits his (often hot-tempered) rants in this film. In addition to Donald Crisp, solid as ever, Anne Revere gets the chance to sprinkle with life wisdom. Revere, who never really gives up as an actress, knows how to attract almost every scene.

The neat story, the beautiful cinematography and the excellent acting of the entire cast make this a charming family film that has not or hardly suffered from the test of time. Very nice.

In terms of decoration, all a bit Swiebertje. And from the big game we get about as much detail as Mickey Rooney. But of course it's also a bit for the horse girls. Movie is a bit dated, even by Penny standards, but Elizabeth Taylor already has the oomph. Albeit a bit more innocent than in Richard Burton's time. Angela Lansbury also still very young as the oldest sister who is more interested in boys. Not the ultimate horse film I had hoped for, but still nice to have seen once. And Elizabeth Taylor got to keep the horse after the shooting.
