"No force in Heaven will release them. No power on Earth can save them."
Phillipe, alias De Muis, is able to escape from the maximum-security prison in the bishop's castle. Marquet and his knights immediately hunt him down. Along the way, however, Phillipe is constantly watched by a horseman with a hawk on his arm. Now that the need is greatest, he rushes to his aid. The knights have to retreat, but have recognized the rider as the exiled Etienne Navarre. Phillipe and his rescuer move on together. When the young man is startled by a wolf in the night, Navarre is nowhere to be found, but a beautiful lady with the eyes of a hawk appears. She calms the wolf. The next morning Phillipe learns why Navarre needs him: he must guide him into the bishop's fortress.

I would have liked to give four stars here, but the somewhat simple story and especially the completely misplaced soundtrack keep me from doing so. Other than that, it's a really fun movie. The makers present it as a historical story in which the main theme is clearly fantasy. Still, as a viewer it is better to regard it as complete fantasy. In terms of decoration and decors, it is completely furnished to your own taste. Exactly as the creators envisioned it. Bet they haven't touched a history book yet. It's so obvious that it doesn't hinder viewing pleasure either.
Rutger Hauer is clearly not quite in his element in this film. I've seen him act better often enough. The rest is fair to good. As mentioned, the story is a bit on the simple side and quite predictable except for some parts of the plot. Nevertheless, it feels nice and familiar. The only thing I missed were the really memorable scenes. The moment that Hauer and Pfeiffer almost fall into each other's arms was a success. Even in spite of the painfully slow movements. Nice movie, although it will be a while before I turn Ladyhawke on again.

Unfortunately, I found the weird mix between anything and everything - that don't work very well accompanied by the slightly misplaced synths. Given the majority of the responses, I was really looking forward to this, but despite the fact that I quite liked the hawk / wolf story, the whole thing didn't appeal to me as much. Nice to see Hauer and the scene where he and Pfeiffer almost ''touch'' each other in the pit is the highlight of this quite special film.

Expensive adventure film that doesn't feel very dated despite its age. The special effects are admittedly not great, the soundtrack is sometimes very eighties, but in my case it also speaks a lot of youth sentiment I must admit.
More than decent fantasy story emerges around an impossible love and curse. A fairytale-like whole that I find comparable to Stardust. A lot of humor, an unlikely hero, other colorful characters, a beautiful lady in trouble, a pinch of suspense and the message that love conquers. A story with a lot of momentum that may have to be seen in the context of the soundtrack regarding the soundtrack. Yes, indeed, it is sometimes unbearable but also has a fine and appropriate melody on several occasions. Something that is mainly seen in the era of '85, something that was probably very hip at the time and which as far as I'm concerned should not be lifted too heavily. For a moment I think I recognize the MacGyver tune and elements of The Spy Who Loved Me. But that will be coincidence.
The film continues with a convincing mix and above all a suitable cast. Broderick and Hauer are excellently cast and fit their roles well, add the lovely Pfeiffer and you have a fascinating trio. Add to that some beautiful landscapes, and an atmosphere with music that turns into dark in the church, and you have a more than fine film that, although cliché, but well entertained.
