Last Days plot

Blake (Michael Pitt) is an introverted musician whose sudden success also threatens to be his downfall. He feels more and more lonely and isolates himself more and more from the outside world. He spends his days wandering in the surrounding forests and meditating in an elegant but dilapidated mansion. It is a period of inner turmoil and disturbed consciousness, interspersed with some rare outbursts of rock 'n roll. Everyone seems to be desperately looking for Blake - his so-called friends, his manager, his record label, even a private detective - but Blake avoids all contact. He especially needs to be alone and even avoids the few friends in his house who only approach him when they need something: money or advice when making a song. Finally he retires to the garden house and looks for a way out.

Another special example from Mr. Van Sant with long shots and a persistent calm. Blake is an unhappy person who shuts himself off from the outside world. However, what I mainly saw was a wandering boy who has relatively 'little' worries on his mind and the depressed period in which he can actually spend the wrong time in the abandoned villa and surroundings. Not everyone has that much space to process grief; I get rather depressed by those business people with all their stress of family and work. Because of this I was not very impressed. Time was also played with (some scenes are repeated several times) and that in itself was well executed, but I wonder if that had so much added value in this case. It slightly takes you back from that accompanying intoxication. Maybe it depends a bit on what frame of mind you encountered this drama in. A unique portion of viewing food, but not a masterpiece.

Gloomy slightly depressing semi K Cobain movie,

Works a bit alienating, but that's all the intention.

Understand that not everyone can do something with this (given the low score) but if you are open to it, it is a small pearl.

No matter how dark and strange.

Also I'm not quite sure what I think of Last Days yet. In any case, it will be reviewed again when I am completely zen and want to go for slow and experimental, because I found it intriguing.

But where I thought Elephant was a great film after the first viewing, I don't have that feeling with Last Days (yet). The film has a rather alienating effect, where the last days of rock musician Blake are shown in long, but beautiful takes. But not much happens in those takes; the Cobain-based Blake barely manages to utter a word (unless he's singing) and mumbles what he does say, roaming the woods and around the house. Furthermore, his roommates/bandmates/friends/acquaintances (Kim Gordon!) have hardly any contact with him, and the contact that does exist seems purely necessary or transactional. The film mainly relies on a beautifully laid out atmosphere, and Van Sant does that quite nicely - but nevertheless it was very slow and eventless. It was beautiful and regularly intriguing, and I certainly see potential for an increase with a re-watch. But for now: 3.0*.
