A well-deserved Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Gena Rowlands, who amazingly plays the role of the psychologically disturbed woman who, moreover, lives strongly under the influence of her, perhaps well-meaning, but rude, brutal and hot-tempered man, actually just as sick as she is. and a nosy, if not wise, family and relationships. Peter Falk is also impressive here.

Beautiful film by Cassavetes with beautiful, truly natural-sincere scenes such as the spaghetti meal, the beach scene, the children at the back of the truck...

A sensitive work too, where the sad fate of the innocent children is emotionally portrayed.

Despite the long running time, I was fascinated by this film by Cassevetes, a top director.

It seems that it has been more than 2 years in the making.

Gena Rowland's portrayal as Mabel, the unstable wife of a humble worker and mother of three young children, is one who is crying out for an Oscar and The Academy heeded that call. It's a little hard to accept that husband Nick [Peter Falk] waits so long to get help, because Mabel's behavior is quite extreme. Falk gives Rowlands excellent counterplay and the kids do their part in the harrowing final. Cassavetes' documentary-style directing heightens the sense of realism, but it all takes much, much too long.

A film that you have to take your time for (which I'm already used to with Cassevetes) but the great thing about it is that it also pays off (in my experience).

What a world achievement by Gena Rowlands as the woman who is just a bit different from what is considered normal and who also comes across as seriously psychotic in between. Her confrontation with the (outside) world comes across as painful and poignant. She seems to be in a childish state somehow, is very sincere, and then of course she is judged for that. What is normal? What is abnormal? While observing the behavior of the various characters, I sometimes started to have doubts.

Cassevetes manages to create natural dialogues, seemingly trivial, and work towards a plot that seems to take place somewhere on an existential level. punishment.
