Topsy-Turvy is a film about two writers struggling to compose a Japanese-style opera. All of this takes place in a late nineteenth-century Victorian setting. The film itself is also laborious, as it's very long and I found it uninteresting. The operatic sections were, at least, not too bad, although this genre always remains irritating.

A bizarrely drawn-out drama film with consistently unfriendly, unsympathetic characters that you, as a viewer, have to endure for 160 minutes. Topsy-Turvy is far too long for the limited content it operates on, despite the excellent performances of almost all the cast members, who hold their own in their complex roles. Director Mike Leigh's approach is remarkably static, preventing fans from visually engaging with the theatrical performances. The camerawork, the angles, and sometimes even the sets make little impression, but thankfully, the performance of the Mikado himself is still magnificent. It's admirable to see that some actors can actually handle themselves quite well within the opera world and seem to actually perform numbers, but the story sometimes seems endless. Jim Broadbent's well-acted, yet very detached, performance reinforces this feeling.
