A bizarre race with - so it seems - toy cars continues in which countless innocent victims are killed. It's well worked out and they come out surprisingly well. It was also a nice idea to have the citizens 'revolt' and thus provide shark food immediately. The pit stops in between also have their charm and the locations are used well. Interaction between the players is pleasant, explosions looked above average and everything is portrayed very aptly. I thought the ending was a bit too much but otherwise well done.

Crazy movie. Amusing Roger Corman schlock set in a futuristic neo-fascist USA in the year 2000 (and the question is how far a fantasy goes). The acting performances are nothing to write home about, although that doesn't bother in these kinds of films. David Carradine is most believable in his lead role as Frankenstein (not to be confused with the monster). Also interesting for those who want to see Sylvester Stallone at work in an early role. In addition to the fast cars, there is enough humor to make the whole easily digestible. Over the top ending that doesn't make sense, well, who cares after all the gimmicks that's passed? Department of culture. And actually beautifully portrayed by director Paul Bartel.

Delicious cult classic!

The simple yet bizarre story of Death Race 2000 makes this film a wacky mix of action, social criticism, eroticism and humor.
Full of references to American society, the story foretells a future where America is at war with Europe, the president lives abroad, and is worth human lives.

I personally like old action movies, because the violence in them often feels more realistic. As well as car races, where I always seem to feel the speed more real. Also in Death Race the car races feel exciting and very realistic, although every now and then you can clearly see that the images have been accelerated to create an illusion of more speed.
The science fiction look of the film is created by the decors of the American landscape in combination with mostly painted dystopian cities, and gives the film a nice old-fashioned sci-fi look.
Nice to see big names like Stallone and Carradine in their younger years. Stallone wonderfully over the top and Carradine imperturbably cool.

The film ends like an American fairy tale and is followed by an audio lecture about the origins of violence in human nature. How primitives killed each other in prehistoric times and that we as modern humans have come a long way since then.
The film clearly questions this in a satirical and entertaining way.

3.5*
