A good film about a doctor sold into slavery after being convicted of treason. A great pirate film set in 1685. A well-crafted mix of action, adventure, romance, and a touch of humor. The first in a series of films starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. It could perhaps have been a bit shorter, but 3.5 stars are definitely deserved.

Errol Flynn, Hollywood's enfant terrible, became the successor to action actor Douglas Fairbanks in the 1930s. And you could say it truly began for him in Captain Blood, the first of many sword films like Sea Hawk and Adventures of Robin Hood, which made him famous. The bad guy is Basil Rathbone, ironically one of Hollywood's best fencers, who, as the villain, always had to lose. And then there's a 19-year-old Olivia de Havilland, who would star in Gone With the Wind a few years later. She would live to be 104, twice as old as Errol Flynn, who was ruined by his difficult life of alcohol and scandal.

Captain Blood arrived at a time when the genre was thriving, and there have always been certainties in the film industry. Errol Flynn plays the role of a rebellious hero who becomes a pirate. This film, in particular, inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, which would later become the basis for the well-known franchise. Much of this is now dated; a genre like this only becomes grander in later years thanks to larger budgets and the necessary effects. Flynn isn't the best actor, but when he's in action, it's not so bad. The film has a certain charm and is quite enjoyable to watch. Clearly a throwback, but enjoyable for fans.

Dr. Blood, ahem, Captain Blood, was recently transferred to a beautiful 4K transfer by WB. Personally, I expected a better 4K. While all the dirt and imperfections are gone, I don't find it to be truly sparkling black and white. Therefore, a 3.5 for the picture, which would have been perfectly normal for a Blu-ray. The sound, on the other hand, is very prominent.

The film is a classic, but certainly not a masterpiece. The story is quite decent, but you can still tell that much of it was filmed in the studios. Location filming was practically nonexistent in those days. Errol Flynn is one of those actors from that era who delivers almost every line with a smile. In contrast, the beautiful Olivia de Havilland comes across as much more mature. This top actress died in 2020, having reached the age of 104. A stark contrast to Errol, who only lived to be 50.

Film 3.5

Image 4K 3.5

Sound 4.0
