Shrewd businesswoman JC Wiatt [Diane Keaton] lives to work and has focused her entire life on that. But when she is told that she is 'inheriting' a baby, her life turns upside down. Attempts to have Elizabeth adopted or to entrust her to a nanny come to nothing and when her promised promotion fails, she immediately quits her job and moves to rustic Vermont where, after a lot of time and some setbacks, she manages to find her feet.

This film is tailor-made for Keaton and under the direction of Charles Syer - who co-wrote the screenplay with Nancy Myers - she never falls into the neurotic acting style that has sometimes hindered her career. It is very refreshing that there is not a single poop or pee joke to be seen, not even in the funny sequence in which JC attempts to change a diaper. There is certainly a lot to laugh about, for example when JC takes Elizabeth to The Center For Brighter Babies and when she wants Elizabeth to eat linguini with a knife and fork. Britt Leach is also hilarious as the plumber who regularly has to visit JC for repairs and whose vocabulary doesn't seem to go much further than "yup" and "nope". Sam Shepard is charismatic as the "doctor" who treats JC after she faints. Of all the baby comedies, this is the best in my opinion.
