Beautiful but boring. The story has too little substance to keep you interested for 150 minutes and the action scenes are often very badly edited. It is more stiff than flowing. I also found the lousy editing annoying throughout the entire film. The only real surprise was the identity of the traitor. Also too many characters that I could barely tell apart. Small 2.5* for this snoozefest, and that especially for the very beautiful photography in the first hour. Tsui Hark has already delivered much better than this.

Nice review.

The film was a bit disappointing when it was originally released, but then expectations were extremely high. Now that a film like this doesn't come out every month, it's a bit easier to appreciate the film. In that respect, I actually found it a bit better when I rewatched it, although that doesn't translate into a higher score or anything.

Visually very worthwhile, where Hark brings a good mix of the lush of the 00 films, and the dynamic of the 90s films. The cast is also very worthwhile, soundtrack by Kawai is great and the fights are also certainly on level, especially the last one between the narrow walls.

Add a tasty bad guy and you have a film that easily entertains. Too bad that in China people nowadays reach for the computer too quickly and easily, in this more classic approach they are really unsurpassed.

4.0* and an extensive review

Friday evening I went on the Asian Tour with this Asiamania release called Seven Swords that I came across at the thrift store, but the average vote was disappointing and the playing time was way too long.

But in itself it all starts not so bad with the location in China, a number of fights with quite a bit of carnage and the visual style provide interest, with the sequel in the form of the already known synopsis of a lone warrior who opposes all events concerning people who know martial arts and are punished for it. But after that the whole thing collapses quite hard.

Because the sound mix is weird because it is not synchronized and also sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. Then there is a multitude of characters, side plots and side roads that add little and are not interesting at all. Then there are the actors, the acting and the dialogues that can be called bad to thin, the whole is long-winded and the pace also limps a bit. In short, this was not very good, although there is worse, but this was still very disappointing. Therefore a narrow fail as far as I am concerned.
