The Strange Woman plot
A naive young girl develops into a wily widow in Maine. She first marries a rich old man for his money and then seduces his son and then sets her sights on her best friend's betrothed. Despite her apparently humane attitude, she does not shy away from any means to gain control of the hearts and purses of the men of the city.

I've seen a lot of movies with Hedy Lamarr, but I still missed this one. Her biography Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story (2017) drew my attention to this.
It's a decent story about a manipulative woman, who also turns out to have a "soft side". All things considered, the film is one big tribute to the beauty of Lamarr, who was herself one of the film producers (a rarity at the time). Not her best movie, but entertaining enough.

Hedy Lamarr plays her beauty to the fullest in her role as femme fatale, succubus, villainous seductress. Like a black widow, she lures men into her web. She often wears black clothes and dark makeup to emphasize her eyes and lips. It is set in the first half of the nineteenth century, which provided an opportunity to show off hoop dresses, big hats and sideburns for George Sanders. Carriages are used to add some action, and thunderstorms to evoke an ominous atmosphere.

Pleasant viewing material from the time of the film noir, even though the story takes place in the early 19th century. Hedy Lamarr is the star and femme fatale on duty and she does a superb job. Nice that she is not a one-dimensional being but a complex human being. Chiseled by childhood traumas, she wants to get the best out of her environment and the men for herself. She comes across as a real psychopath who does the opposite of what she says and vice versa. But on the other hand, she also has a generous altruistic side that also arouses sympathy. That way it all remains interesting enough in this story that is a mix of crime and psycho-drama. The b&w staging - in the hands of Ulmer and co - provides a beautiful artistic quality. It strikes me that at times a filter is set at the zoom on Lamarr, which makes her (beautiful) appearance appear even more magical due to a touch of blur. All tricks of the forum are therefore applied for maximum effect. Fine.
The end of the film is an ending that just fits a femme fatale (= physical demise). But still, as a viewer, I still thought of her with a touch of sympathy despite her rotten pranks.
