"Never try to deceive two women!"
Toiling artist Gerry Carroll meets Sally while on vacation. A love affair develops but he keeps a secret that he is married. Suffering from a mental illness, Gerry returns home where he paints an angel of death and then poisons his wife. He marries Sally but after a while he feels the urge to paint the angel of death again, making history seem to repeat itself.

A Hitchcockian plot and one of the greatest actors of that time, Humphrey Bogart. According to many this is one of his weakest roles, but that is undoubtedly because Bogart was still trying to shake off the gangster/detective image. Not a good acting performance, but not really disappointing either.
Perhaps it is because of the British black humor that Bogart does not quite hold his own?
In any case, The Two Mrs. Carrolls is an exciting thriller that should be seen. Very predictable, but that should not spoil the fun.
It could have been better. Hitchcock could have undoubtedly gotten more out of Bogart and Stanwyck, (or taken other actors). The film lacks some power now. It is certainly worth seeing. 3.5*

Nice thriller, Stanwyck and Bogart do their best but I personally would have preferred a normal motive for Bogart's character, be it greed, money or passion, but I personally did not find this as a really satisfying denouement.
What remains is a nice thriller, but with such a star cast I expected more.
