The casino owner still believes in miracles and when a debtor dies, he hopes to find happiness in an apple he buys from an old woman. Happiness really seems to come when the daughter of the deceased goes to work for him. The apple lady has a less good Christmas because she cannot be with her daughter overseas.

A nice film about a poor little woman who sells apples on the street and brings good luck to a gangster. Not really an original story, but the characters are fun (the cast certainly contributes to this). However, it is quite drawn out, making the film really too long. This last film by Frank Capra is far from his best, but still reasonably entertaining.

Director Frank Capra was reportedly so disappointed after filming (particularly due to the constant infighting on set between lead actors Glenn Ford and Bette Davis) that he threw in the towel and never made another film. The film itself, however, is not all that bad, although it is considerably too long and occasionally on the exaggerated and silly side. The plot is fun, but the jokes and gags are milked for too long, causing things to bog down halfway through into farcical situations. Aside from that, the characters do have the necessary charm, and the dialogue and situations are often very funny. Incidentally, the film is a remake of Capra's own *Lady For A Day*.

Ugh. The film comes across as extremely dated. Clearly shot in studios, and it really looks like it too. The acting also feels unnatural. Everything film can offer (taking you to another place)—what I find so wonderful and beautiful about that medium—this picture fails to deliver. And in terms of comedy content, the film never becomes funny. I watched the second half with less attention, because 136 minutes was really too much.
