The Great Lie plot
"Sometimes there's a terrible penalty for telling the truth."
He has just remarried, but it turns out to be illegal and the first thing he does is visit his girlfriend. A struggle for his love may arise between his wife, the concert pianist and his girlfriend, but he chooses the girlfriend. Then the news comes that his plane has crashed.

There was definitely more potential in such a premise. The first part of the film was rather bland and improbable, and when the theme finally becomes interesting, the story is rushed through quickly and for convenience.
Bette Davis and Mary Astor pull it off quite well in their acts.

The film starts off quite lackluster, and you wonder which direction it is actually heading; only when the rivalry between the two women intensifies does the film begin to come to life a little, with, of course, the whole drama involving the child and the return of Pete, which pushes matters to the limit.
The film subsequently chooses not to milk the drama endlessly, which is a sensible choice in itself, but it makes the ending of the film rather flat.
