Really, Kaurismäki must almost be the king of the small film. He probably never created any major masterpieces (I'm almost certain of that now, even though I've only seen six of them), but so far they have all been small masterpieces. Just a flawless filmmaker, this fine Finn. His secrets: stylish black and white, ugly, silent men with leather boots, pointed boots and sunglasses, black or absurd humor, rich fantasy, silly plot twists, stale American blues, soul and jazz music, and as a distillate of all this, an unlikely amount of authentic cool. Really, in an all-time top 10 coolest films, Kaurismäki should be represented more than once. Nothing but praise for this headstrong freebooter.

This is a very absurd film by Aki. Perhaps a bit too absurd, because the film doesn't go much further than a lot of absurdism. Although there is a lot to laugh about.

A quite absurd and dryly funny road trip, as only Aki Kaurismäki can make.

I must say that the humor here is sometimes very dark. It took me some time to get into it. The black and white photography, in combination with the pleasant music, creates an alienating, but pleasant atmosphere. The humor didn't always touch me, but there are certainly more than enough successful moments. The fact alone that everyone's name is Frank also creates a number of successful moments.

And in the end I enjoyed it quite a bit. You have to like the humor, but if you like it, you will also like the rest of Kaurismäki's oeuvre.

3.5*
