Don't think jazz is the best music to accompany romance, but it's certainly the best thing to experience in this film.
The Armstrong scene is good evidence of that.
Decent atmosphere of the Parisian cellars, populated by passionate music fanatics, but otherwise the story is too thin.
Actually also a bit nouvelle-vague, with some live street recordings and one can still count on three names such as Newman, Woodward and Poitier, although they are not exactly great either.
One oddity is that the cast lists "... and introducing Serge Reggiani" even though the man had been in the business for almost 20 years.

Why is this such a forgotten film? Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier play two American jazz musicians who have washed up in Paris and stick around with verve. They are not real friends, what unites them is the music they blow into the world night after night in a smoky club, and the love for two American girlfriends who are on holiday in the City of Light.
The story is reminiscent of that of the young Miles Davis, who fell in love with Juliette Gréco in post-war Paris, but his future lay in America and he could not take her there, because racial segregation still existed and mixed marriages were forbidden. The film does not dare to go that far: the script apparently originally included interracial relationships, but the studio put a stop to that. That is why you see Newman immediately fall in love with the blonde tourist and Poitier with her black friend.
Still, it's a pleasure to watch the witty dialogues, with Newman's cynical reactions and especially Poitier's remark that he can just be a musician in Paris. And the atmosphere of the exuberant performances in the jazz club that you simply want to attend (the jam with Louis Armstrong in the lead), the rush of being the star of the evening and the hangover the next morning.
