Downright delightful film that I saw on release in 1994 in a film program and then dismissed it as bland nonsense and an appallingly soft egg called Tim Robbins. Something I now think differently.

Humorously it is shown how the big boss is actually done with it, the incumbent management expects a disaster and comes up with a particularly dirty plan to take the case over in the long run. The victim seems to have to be the wimpy Barnes, but then they are disappointed. Colorful characters and special dialogues pass by in a typical Coen Brothers whole and I must say that I am constantly bursting with laughter.

If there is something to notice, it is the role of Jason Leigh who comes across as a bit too exaggerated and made. Does the role not suit her? Does the character simply fail...? Hard to say. She does recover a bit towards the end but the overall level is dragged down a bit. Other than that the soundtrack is delightful, as is the general atmosphere, Robbins once again proves himself as an outstanding actor and the film is generally more than entertaining.

End result: great movie, really nice.

Wonderfully absurd and over the top. With more than a nod to film noir and classics like Citizen Kane. Three lead actors in good shape. But above all a lot of humor. 'For the kids... you know'.

I kept thinking about Forrest Gump (1994) when I watched this movie from the same year. Here too we are dealing with an "idiot" who somehow gets the opportunity to use his influence against his better judgment. As things get a bit out of hand at Forrest with his travel around the world, Norville gets a multinational shoved under his legs.

It is a very light-hearted film that should be taken with a serious grain of salt, because in reality impossible to realize. If only it were that simple to make your own shares plummet with impunity and then buy them back cheaply...

Furthermore, some stereotypical characters that just color within the lines, although I found Jennifer Jason Leigh with her role as a reporter quite irritating. It is a film full of satire and one that can also be enjoyed by children. Especially when Norville shows hisawesome talent with the invention of the hula hoop and the frisbee, although this is actually completely wrong. The hula hoop was already there just after the Second World War and the frisbee was an invention resulting from a baker of the same name, also just after WWII.

I forgive the screenwriters these poetic freedoms because of the fine atmosphere and decor at times. That clock for instance and those cogs were very clever.
