Pleasant film of a man who sees his life changed by one event. And therefore also his ties with other people in the village. His relationship with Cledir is actually a reflection between the old and new Maiquel. The macho guy who hooks a pretty girl, but ultimately has responsibilities and struggles with them because they don't really fit his new 'self'. Everything is beautifully framed with interesting figures. The result is a colorful gangster film with tropical sounds. And not, like in other films, someone without a future in a ghetto district.

Beautiful film.

First off, I found Maiquel to be a genuinely intriguing character, unlike some here. Apparently characters in these types of films have to conform to all kinds of gangster stereotypes or something, otherwise it's not done. Maiquel indeed makes strange decisions during the film, so be it. People make strange decisions every now and then. In any case, I found his introverted character a lot more interesting than just another shouty, Tony Montana-like idiot.

Furthermore, this is visually one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a long time. The beautiful play of light and use of color is particularly noticeable, but the editing is also flawless. I always enjoy the whole Brazilian setting, often nice and lively and colorful. The soundtrack is a bit dull, but still appropriate and atmospheric. Every now and then it even takes on an almost surreal touch, such as those separately depicted murder scenes towards the end of the film.

An incredibly beautiful film, with the only criticism being that it may be just a little too long in the end. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Big 4.0* for now, but could go higher.

Nice review.

A crime film that feels a bit more modern, that is not so obvious. In the wake of City of God came this Man of the Year, where a rather unfortunate lout strangely becomes the hero of his neighborhood. It's a nice setup that makes the first half of the film very enjoyable.

The second half is certainly a bit more traditional, but not always fun. The acting is good, visually it looks neat and although the music could have been a bit more impactful, it is a quite modern-sounding soundtrack (for a film that is).

4.0* and a extensive review
