'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' excels in several areas. I like movies that are set in one location and where it's mostly the actors who have to steal the show. That's what they do in this picture.
Fantastic roles from Taylor and Newman, but especially from Burl Ives. The mix between humor and drama works especially well after his appearance, with his grumpy, harsh remarks always. Furthermore, this whole is very well written. Interesting from the start, with classy dialogues and slowly working towards different highlights. Sister-in-law Mae is also doing well in an annoying way. 
Had hoped Taylor would hit her right at some point. But unfortunately that just didn't happen. Had a good time with this family drama. Intriguing from start to finish.

A film in which the dialogues are central and it must be said that Newman and Ives hold their own, Taylor might have benefited more if Burton had been her opponent because she is a bit covered in the violence of Newman and Ives. Saw the film again a few months ago and caught myself that I wasn't as captivated as I was on previous viewings, so only a three, maybe I should see the film again.

Time for a review. I only really liked the movie earlier. Now I could appreciate the Tennessee Williams story better. The film adaptation of his 'A streetcar named desire' was more successful, with Cat on a hot tin roof the theater stuck more. The story of a family associated with lies and facades. Until they have no choice but to puncture that balloon. I immediately thought of Festen and even Knives Out.
But you do notice that sometimes things go a bit rough. Tennessee Williams wasn't happy with the script that had cut or altered his play just too much. Paul Newman was also not happy with that, because he had just expected that it would be a film adaptation of the well-known play. The battle between theater and the film world. In Williams's eyes, his story had been censored, but it was still too controversial for the Academy Awards judges (where it failed to cash in on a single nomination).
The movie starts off rather cool. It takes a while to get interesting. Irritating children, everyone mainly talks side by side with a mask on and none of them are sympathetic people. It only becomes interesting when Brick enters into a dialogue with Big Daddy. You see where the talent is in the film. It can partly maintain that level, but that theatricality, even for a film from the 50s, doesn't always do the film well. The strength lies in the story with a few strong actors. The credit is mainly due to the acclaimed Tennessee Williams, less to the film.
