I have to review this one once, can't form a good picture after my first viewing. It's not the type of movie that (like I've done) you have to step into without prior knowledge. But then I want to see other Fellini's first to get to know him and his style better, this was my first from this director and that wasn't very useful either. Some familiarity with this director seems to me to be a must for seeing this autobiographical, psycho-analytical film. The piece what Dievegge wrote is very interesting and I will keep that in mind for the next review, I should have read that beforehand (including 'spoilers'). A provisional spacious 3 *.

Now I also know where Cuarón got his inspiration from for his film Roma (2018). But it's also become much clearer to me now why I don't think Roma is such a good film. In , cinematography, pace and story fit seamlessly together, and that is much less the case in Roma, it feels more made to me there.

8 1/2 is the story about a man who, in the deepest darkness of this existence... manages to drastically change his psychological position towards himself, others and life and who recharges himself with new energy.. .a new attitude to life. It is not a film to understand, but to feel. Film is an art form in which there is no room to think. The last sentence literally comes from the director. Well, film is art and a lot is possible...but it also has to be something and I didn't feel the film at all. 5/10

My 6th Fellini in the meantime and I can gradually conclude that it is not exactly my favorite director. La strada was most within my interests. All the other films - nevertheless highly regarded - did not interest me much. This 8 1/2 also falls under this. Technically fine and very neat, but the film just couldn't grab me. It all mattered little to me.

I have the impression that I am by no means the only one experiencing this same feeling. It will also be my last Fellini for a while. At times very busy film with many characters that I could not always place or say what they actually had as added value. Although it all started fine with an excellent opening scene, but later as the film progressed it fell like a pudding for me.

Unfortunately ...
