I didn't think it was bad. I didn't find the various short films really extreme, but still worth watching.

The different stories were quite different from each other, there wasn't really a general theme.

In Dumplings I was particularly struck by the sound. The crunching and swallowing came out very clearly.

I liked Cut better visually, with the woman and the different cords, although Box was perhaps the best of the three.

I did find the endings a bit less. Now, I did enjoy this film and it is worth seeing once.

Extreme no, not in terms of gore but in terms of style, atmosphere and weirdness.

Box is unparalleled. A strong drama story with nightmare-like sequences, almost Lynchian I would say. Very stylish, a subtle soundtrack (that children's tune!), mysterious, colorful shots, really enjoyed this unpredictable piece of film from start to finish. And that's a first with Miike, not that I've seen a lot of him, but what I did see of him never really made an impression like this one. Maybe it also plays a role that it's a short film as opposed to, for example, an Audition. 4.5*

By the way, a good choice not to show the burned twin sister in the box completely, although you were hoping for that, but something so physically gross wouldn't even fit in with the tone of the rest. If Miike has delivered more of this kind of work, I'd be interested

Dumplingsis not far behind. Bizarre, original story that manages to combine abortions (the director is Chinese...) with vanity and the urge for external beauty. Still pretty sickly worked out because the disgusting is such a huge contrast with the beautifully shot whole. 4*

CutI find somewhat lagging behind the other two. It is certainly fascinating but at times also monotonous and a bit too stage-like. On the other hand, the camerawork is excellent: Cutstarts off immediately with a beautiful long take and also has beautiful camera angles.
The only thing I can't quite place is the ending... 3.5*

That makes a total of 4*, but if it were up to Box it would be even higher.

Equal anthology film.

All three segments in Three Extremes seem to be reasonably well-rehearsed, despite the fact that each director has his own unique tone. With names like Takashi Miike and Park Chan-wook, the makers have also found not the least noteworthy participants, but unfortunately they do not do really great. On the other hand, they do not sink too deeply through the ice either.

Dumplings (2.0*). I couldn't do much with the feature film and the shorter version as well. The advantage is that the nonsense that director Fruit Chan comes up with here is a lot shorter and therefore over faster. Atmospheric music choices and a number of uninhibited images make an impression, but the characters are ridiculous and the visual aspect is not very well thought out.

Cut (3.0*). Many fellow users label this segment as the least of the film, for me it came out as the winner. It is all nicely shot with innovative camera work and beautiful colors. The acting is not that great and the humor is of questionable level, but Cut remains captivating for the entire duration and due to the very simplistic motives it is even unpredictable to a certain extent. Fine entertainment that does not last too long.

Box (2.5*). Miike focuses on disturbing ideas and gets quite far with it, especially because he works in an unexpectedly stylized way. The events are regularly portrayed in an atmospheric way, but the content of the story is secretly just not all that interesting. The finale even borders on the ridiculous and costs Box a pass. However, it remains a step ahead of Chan's nonsense.

This means that Three Extremes can be labelled with a precise 2.5*. Despite the attempts to make it all relatively shocking, I as a viewer do not expect the images shown to stay with me for very long. It is certainly not bad, but I cannot really call it great either.
