Nice Don't Look Now avant la lettre, quite atmospheric but not really exciting until the last half hour. 3*

When Nicholas Roeg was working on Don't Look Now in Venice, there must have been some Italians looking over his shoulder to see what he was doing.
Quickly brought in a local director to come up with a Venice thriller a few months before Roeg himself.
However, the result is impressive: "he focuses on Aldo's atmosphere ... a lot of mysterious searching through narrow alleys and a lot of fog on the canals."
Story is more of a whodunnit, with some nonfunctional nudity, strange figures with the necessary sexual deviations, killer with leather gloves (we don't really believe in an old lady, do we?)
Nice kills in porn cinema and at the parakeets.

The setting in Venice is hard to beat and is ideal for a whodunnit. Furthermore, there is the excellent direction and photography. George Lazenby is fine in the leading role and the other cast does not go wrong either, with Anita Strindberg in the lead. The confusing story is marked at regular intervals by creepy POVs of the serial killer. Creepy also because of Ennio Morricone's score. Rarely have children's voices in the mix sounded so creepy. The film has a satisfying and exciting climax. Mission accomplished.
