A band leader is murdered on the pleasure boat on which the parents of amateur detective Nick Charles throw money. A day later, Nick steps aboard, accompanied by his charming wife Nora and the clever fox terrier Mr. Asta, to track down the culprit. However, there are plenty of people on board who would rather see the bandleader dead than alive, so there's a lot of work to be done.
