Little surprise.

A movie that fits perfectly between 90s and 70s martial arts. You can still clearly recognize the influences of the somewhat older SB films, yet you can see that a lot is changing as well.

The shift to the open air is indeed striking. Whereas most of Shaw's films have a certain studio feel to them (and a great deal was shot in the studio), here you get beautiful, sunny, and expansive landscapes.

Furthermore, the Liu-Li combination is very strong, and Li clearly demonstrates here that he can certainly fight without ropes. Incidentally, the film contains a striking number of fights and action scenes; the story is minimal and is told intermittently.

Not super spectacular, but very cool fight scenes, pretty funny humor, and a relaxed, lighthearted atmosphere.

Very nice video for the fans, although that is probably where it ends. Chia-Liang Liu remains a slight underdog favorite of mine.

3.5*

The things you find on Netflix these days. Nice to watch, but it must be said that time has clearly taken its toll on this film. As with many wushu films from this era, it appears that the film was dubbed afterwards. Because the focus here is entirely on the action, it isn't too bothersome, but it is noticeable. Furthermore, a lot of the filming is done with a fisheye lens, which sometimes looks very strange. Finally, a rather corny sense of humor.

But enough to balance that out. So, lots of action, and it looks good. But the dance scene in the square, in particular, was a spectacle to watch. It wasn't necessary for the story to drag it out so long, but as far as I'm concerned, it could have gone on even longer. And thanks to the lighthearted atmosphere, it's all quite pleasant to watch. 2.5*.

Revised on Blu-ray from the Shawscope Vol. 2 box set by Arrow.

Good film starring Jet Li from his Shaolin Temple period, also known as Shaolin Temple 3. He plays a hot-headed monk who leaves the Shaolin Temple without permission to avenge his parents, who were murdered by the ruling Manchurian warlord. In doing so, he unites the North and South Shaolin Temples because they share a common goal.

The dragon dance in front of the palace was a brilliant piece of choreography, as were the mass scenes. There is also some humor in the film, for example when Li, as a shepherd, leads his two companions (disguised as sheep) through border control. Almost everything was filmed on location, which is always a big plus.

After the film, Jet Li did indeed marry his companion Huang Qi-yan, they had two daughters together, but divorced again in 1990.
