Since I am a big fan of Fulci's horrors, I simply had to see this one as well.
Throughout the entire film, an infectious soundtrack is rammed into your head (as in many spaghetti westerns) so that by the end you can at least hum along.
Tom Corbett is a cooler version of Clint Eastwood's character(s) in Leone's films. I thought the casting was well done anyway, because that little Chinese guy with his terrible rotten mouth also fits well with the era when people didn't wash themselves very often. Furthermore, there were a few very funny scenes, like the one with the whip, but to call that shocking in this day and age...
All in all, it was actually a very enjoyable western with which Fulci shows that he can do more than just make horror.

Received this one recently and watched it last weekend, titled The Brute and the Beast.
I could choose between two English audio tracks, a European one, and an American one. I chose the first one, although I would have preferred the Italian one.
Surprisingly fun Spaghetti Western, in which two stars of the genre are paired together: Nero and Hilton.
Although I hold Nero in very high regard, I have to admit that he seemed to be acting fairly much on autopilot in this film, whereas Hilton impressed me much more. I only knew the latter by name until now, but I thought he was pretty cool and awesome; I will definitely watch more of him.
The storyline is fairly standard for the genre, but it certainly had its moments and there was plenty of shooting, especially by Hilton, who clearly enjoyed it.
Nino Castelnuovo, as the main villain, is in fine form and is effectively a complete psychopath and sadist. The scene in which he completely lashes Nero with a whip makes quite an impression.
However, THE highlight of the film was definitely Nero, who, shooting as he crashes into a wall in a runaway cart, gets thrown out, performs a somersault in the air like a seasoned gymnast, lands behind the villains, and then guns them down. Hilarious!
In short: a very entertaining film.
A seven, or 3.5 stars.

Fulci is not known for his westerns, and he made very few of them, certainly compared to the number of horror films he made. The screenplay is by Fernando di Leo, known as a writer for some early Leones around this time and later as a director of crime films. Besides the two western actors, I find the casting of Nino Castelnuo excellent as the villain. I know him primarily as the male lead from *Les Parapluies de Cherbourg*, and here he plays a total villain. A sadist who enjoys it when others suffer. The story is fairly straightforward but is told well and with a lot of energy, and has a striking anti-rich-people edge. Scott has literally taken over the entire village; the fake baby of a son only wants more. Fulci was politically very left-wing, so that must have suited him. There are some very good scenes, such as the big confrontation with the whip, which is easily better than the final scene.
