A lot happens in the life of single mother Sammy: her son Rudy begins to fantasize about his father, she reconnects with her boyfriend, she finds a new boss and her brother Terry arrives for a visit after months of nothing. to have heard. Great little movie with very good acting.
Mark Ruffalo stood out for me. He certainly doesn't play the most sympathetic person, but I could still sympathize with him. From a technical point of view it sometimes goes a bit too fast, but nevertheless it is largely fascinating to follow. The story is interesting and believable at all times.
It all lacks something to really be top. I think a better director would have handled it a little differently visually. It's pretty thin in that area. That does not alter the fact that You Can Count on Me is a nice viewer, which is pushed to a nice height by the good acting and the realistic characters.

After seeing Manchester by the Sea (2016) on Monday, I immediately continued and watched this one by the same director yesterday. There are many similarities between these two films. Many ideas for Manchester seem to have come from this film. You Can Count on Me has become a very strong directorial debut. In both films, an uncle and a child with an absent parent play an important role. In Manchester the uncle is given custody of the child, in You Can Count on Me the uncle comes to live with his sister, the child's mother. Trauma from the past also plays a role in both films.
You Can Count on Me focuses on the relationship between the uncle and his sister in addition to the uncle-child relationship. That relationship is presented by the actors with great conviction and credibility. They are two beautiful films that are qualitatively close to each other. The story of the two films is so different that they are fine to watch one after the other. Of this director I only found Margaret (2011) less successful, I saw the 'short' version, but that film had quite a few faced problems that kept it in the archives for years and was only assembled later. You Can Count on Me is very solid. 3.5*

Good film about a single mother whose brother returns to their native village after a long time. Simply a beautiful, understated drama with characters that seem sincere. No major events, but the film never bores. Excellent acting in this fine directorial debut from Kennet Lonergan.
