BB #8

Vous etes décidément une drôle de pistolet!

A French film about Spaniards who have no desire for Napoleon—that feels ridiculous from the very beginning. And besides, apparently this film is the third installment in a series of Caroline Chérie films, but I’ll leave that aside for now.

The images are interesting in themselves because it is one of those early color films where the oversaturated colors are not quite right—the red is too red, for example. That holds a certain nostalgia for me; I grew up with it somewhat. Many of my father's holiday photos had the same thing, and there were quite a few photos among them taken in the same region where the film was shot. Strangely enough, the photos on IMDB look as if the film has been colorized, but the copy I saw looks like those are the original colors from that era—and the French Wikipedia is also adamant about the Technicolor.

As a story, it is primarily a tin-soldiers movie at the height of non-functional uniforms—including a half-overcoat worn only carelessly over the left shoulder, and a stovepipe hat—which is functional, though, because your Paddington lunch fits underneath it. And all of this in fine colors of red, yellow, and pale blue with red trim, with a curved saber at the hip—and not just for show, as a Zorro-esque fight is not lacking either.

BB still has a small role, but compared to the previous—already 7—films, there is steadily more acting involved. It doesn't really make much of an impression yet, though; this poster was probably made afterwards as well—how else do you explain that the actress, who is more of a side issue to the plot, is featured so prominently? And what a disappointment that must have been at the time for everyone who was lured to this film by her name.
