Mafia drama starring the ever strong Christopher Walken. Acting is in any case the strongest point of the film with Chris Penn, Vincent Gallo and Benicio Del Toro in important roles. Especially Penn again very strong. Story is told a bit slow. As a result, it never becomes more than a nice snack.

Director Abel Ferrara does away with the romantic and epic grandeur with which Hollywood raised the gangster film, as The Funeral is a dark drama in the form of a Greek tragedy. The concepts of revenge and remorse are the themes around which the tormented characters search for redemption, but in the end only find liberation with their own demise. As Ferrara aptly illustrates when Johnny Tempio is shot dead as he leaves the cinema where he had just gone to watch 'The Petrified Forest'. The bleak ending is representative of the entire film and leaves a bitter aftertaste.

It is striking that the average of mafia films always seems to be one star lower here if there is no glamor and bullshit like honor and such. Leave it and Ferrara pull this away. That with Ferrara's Catholic guilt and penance obsessions makes the mafia here a morally empty hell. Not more than that. Aided by a strikingly attractive cast, a terrifying Chris Penn leading the way. Certainly not perfect, Ferrara is never for me I believe, but strong.
