"She took another woman's place on her wedding night!"
The New York nightclub singer is tired of her job and to escape her boss, mobster Eddie Fields, she secretly flees to Montreal. From her chambermaid Emily, she buys the address of farmer Jim Gilson, who was linked to Emily through a dating agency, and leaves for the prairie town of Elks Crossing. She marries Jim that same day. Even when the farm goes bad, she stays with him. Then one day Eddie is at the door again...
