Oh dear.

I've seen quite a few Elvis flicks, but this one is yet another low point. The king has made a handful of good films, unfortunately this one is not one of them. He made 31 in total and they were usually very dull films to promote a new album. Elvis had a contract that he wanted to get out of. This was only achieved in '69, which is why crap films like this were created. With a story that makes you cry and ditto acting. Intended as a framework for the songs.

Bad, only half an extra for the songs.

Not the first film based on the murder ballad Frankie and Johnny(which saw the light of day in 1899). This Elvis adaptation is set in New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century with old steamboats on the Mississippi, decadent Mardi Gras and Dixieland jazz. So the songs have a retro feel and you have to be in favor of that style to appreciate it. This Frankie and Johnny is an old school musical farce, albeit with the king of rock'n roll in the leading role. Compared to other light musicals it is equally entertaining. Lightweight entertainment even if it is based on a murder ballad. Nicely written script with the right mix of humor and door-slamming action. It's nice that filming was also done here on location in New Orleans.
