Satansbraten plot

The film follows the hysterical attempts of the starving, confused writer Walter Kranz to scrape together enough money through begging, borrowing and stealing to survive and at the same time give meaning to his disordered life. He is unable to write enough to continue receiving royalties from his publisher. To get material, he interviews a woman he thinks is a prostitute. When his wife says that his poetry resembles that of the famous gay mythical German poet Stefan George, that is reason enough for Walter to investigate the gay scene more closely. He soon becomes something of a celebrity there.

This is not Fassbinder's best work, but it is his most experimental. He had a background in the avant-garde theater of the 1960s. His own group created Antiteater. At the end, a quote appears from Antonin Artaud, founder of the “theater of cruelty”. Because language was inadequate as a means of expression, actors had to resort to screaming and physical expressions. Perversions and filth were a protest against petty-bourgeois society.

Swearing is used, with swear words like Frühjahrskartoffeln and Schwachkopf, and with the expression Fliegen ficken. The murder investigation, which resembles a parody of German crime dramas, has a high degree of absurdity. Why would the police question a suspect if there is no body?

Walter Kranz, a poet with writer's block, is portrayed as a parasite and a narcissist. He expects those around him to lend him money and admire him blindly, even when he hasn't put a word on paper for two years. He does not care about his fellow men, but uses them as inspiration.

He wants to sleep with every woman, except his own wife. Believing himself to be the reincarnation of Stefan George, he begins experimenting with homosexuality, resulting in a farcical scene. Schwul is a neutral word nowadays, but half a century ago it carried a mocking connotation. Some moments have a sadomasochistic edge. It contains repulsive elements, but also deeper layers and shameless humor.
