“I am angry all the time... and I don't know why.”
I always have a bit of mixed feelings about Crash. There are some impressive scenes in it and the actors are all fantastic. Directing, visual, editing (insane), the score, etc. Everything is of the highest quality. But Haggis should have taken a closer look at his script. Characters change character and opinion within one scene (Bullock's character is the best example of this), and that racism is bad is just not pushed down your throat.
Everyone knows that racism is terrible, but Haggis doesn't come up with answers or at least interesting or new angles. Every dialogue or monologue is also about racism or mistrust, and it's not really realistic. Nobody talks about these topics all the time, but in the world of Haggis, all the characters happen to be dealing with racism or related issues at the same time. Michael Pena and Soomekh also play the only two sympathetic characters, and for the rest you sometimes want to put them all underground. There is so much hatred and anger in the film, but it also radiates a certain emptiness and superficiality. Crash is an interesting movie for sure, and there are some impressive scenes in it. But Haggis is a bit lost in the story and the mosaic approach.

The world would be a better place if people didn't have so many prejudices and a little more empathy. That's how I would sum up Crash in one sentence. Racism is widely used here because it is the most visible and extreme form of prejudice, but in the end it goes further than that. The cascade of events and the triggers for them make you think for a while. There are some wonderful scenes in the film, such as when police officer Ryan (Matt Dillon) rescues the woman from a burning car he humiliated the day before and the Persian who kills a Latino workman threaten with a gun . Grandiose emotional releases. People all have their worries and their problems, but we never look much further than our noses. That little bit of understanding, like when the young cop recognizes a man under extreme pressure in Cam Thayer, can make all the difference. It doesn't all end well, but given the situations it could have been much worse.
Despite the many different characters, the film never becomes chaotic. I found the subplot with Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser the least interesting and the film also pays the least attention to this, but the outcome fits in with what the film wants to tell, namely that prejudices eventually lead to loneliness[/spoiler ].
Crash remains a very nice confrontation with our own human nature, even after the third viewing. I think this was one of the best movies of 2004. That the film is in the top 250 is only deserved. And actually, this is a film that we should keep in mind every now and then when we find ourselves in a conflict situation.
